How to Keep Vacation Mindset in Every Day Life

Aug 06, 2023

I just got back from a great vacation with my husband! If anyone is planning a trip to Cape May, NJ, I highly recommend staying at Lokal!

Now I am back in the real world and started thinking, what if I can take parts of my vacation attitude into my everyday life? Here are two mindset shifts I am going to incorporate in my day to day.

“Everything is figureoutable.” Marie Forleo

I have noticed lately in “real life” that I am frequently primed to react and stress out. But when I am on vacation, my whole system is down-regulated. Things don’t seem like such a big deal. For example, this vacation we learned that the company that delivers our kid's camp bags went out of business. So we are out the money we paid, and now we had to figure out how to get our kid's stuff home. In “real life,” this would have stressed me out. I would have been angry and freaked out trying to find time to get their stuff. But I was on vacation and thought we will figure something out, but not right now. Sure enough, later that afternoon we got an email from camp that they had found a solution.

Now, I’m not saying you should just ignore things and it will work out. But freaking out and stressing out for hours would not have helped or changed the outcome. Because I was in vacation mode, I was able to decrease my reactivity and allow things to unfold as they will. If the camp had not found a solution, then my husband and I would have figured it out. The drama is not needed for the solution. Why? Because everything is figureoutable!

“If it's out of my hands, it’s out of my head.”

I first heard this from Amy Porterfield. We think if we let go of things, stuff won’t get done. We fool ourselves into thinking constant worry is needed to get things done. When we go on vacation, we are able to put all of our worries and to-dos out of our minds. Why? Because we can’t do anything about them when we are away. So why can’t we apply the same logic at home? If something is to be done, do it or schedule a time to do it. And then, LET IT GO. And if there is nothing to do, process the emotions and then, LET IT GO as well.

Think of all the time and mental energy you will save but employ these two mindset shifts.
