A Simple Joy
Dec 21, 2022
Today’s post is simple. Find a few small things that bring joy. We often put our joy on the back burner while caring for everyone else. Or we have so much to do that we feel we need to earn our joy and relaxation. It is a big shift to start thinking about yourself and what you need.
You will most likely feel like there is not enough time in the day, especially this week, to take some time for yourself. I would argue that is exactly what you need to do to be able to take care of everyone else. It’s the whole put on your oxygen mask first before helping others saying. We will dive more into this concept in January, where I will focus on how we can create more time in our day. In the meantime, try this simple exercise and see what happens. This might be the best gift you will receive this holiday season!
Take out a piece of paper. Write down five small things that will bring you joy. Make them simple, sustainable, and kind. The goal is to treat yourself, not to add another item to the to-do list. See how many times you can do them over the next two weeks.
My five four are:
- Turn on all the battery-powered candles, plug in the indoor Christmas lights, play holiday music, and sit for 5 minutes enjoying the coziness.
- Enjoy a nice long bath at least once.
- Journal.
- Light my holiday-scented candles when home.
Don’t worry if it takes you a while to create this list or if you can’t think of five things. I thought I could come up with so many things and only got to four. It shows you how little time we spend thinking of what we truly need.
What little bits of joy can you give yourself in the next two weeks?
