When is the right time?

Jun 14, 2023

“When is the right time?”

This question comes up in conversations, and it’s something I struggle with myself.

When is the right time to have kids?

When is the right time to declutter your schedule?

When is the right time to get healthy?

When is the right time to launch a coaching program?

When is the right time to make changes or take specific actions?

We all look for the elusive “right time,” hoping that we will succeed if the time is right.

Here is the truth

There is no right time.

And

It is always the right time.

Some times in, our lives are undeniably more challenging than others. But life will always have its ups and downs. That is never going to change. There isn’t some magical “right time” that will eliminate struggle or ensure lasting change.

So how do you know if the time is right? Here are three questions to ask yourself.

What is your level of commitment?

Are you genuinely committed or just interested? I l first learned this question from Jody Moore, a life coach I follow. Commitment means you will do what it takes to achieve your goal and keep going when you fall “off track.” You will look at what is working and find solutions for what isn’t. You will use your failures to move forward rather than as a reason to stop. On the other hand, if you are simply interested, you might experiment with ideas or changes. You will dabble here and there without being consistent in your efforts.

Both options are fine, but being honest and compassionate about where you stand is essential. If you are interested, don’t beat yourself up for not sticking to your plan. You have already identified that you are going to dabble. You can always decide to commit at a later date.

Does this align with your core values?

Yes, you are probably sick of me talking about core values. But they are essential to figuring out if this is the right change for you at this point in your life, which approach or tactic is best suited for you, and if this is the right time. Trying to live out of alignment with your core values can make you feel unfulfilled, overwhelmed, and burnt out. You can avoid this unnecessary pain by evaluating if the change you are considering aligns with your core values.

What do you need to let go of to start now, and can you do that?

Meaningful and lasting change often requires letting go of limiting thoughts and beliefs.  For example, if you want to eat healthy, you might have to let go of the thought that you can’t maintain healthy habits over the summer. If you want more free time, you might have to let go of the thought that you are too busy or there aren’t enough hours in the day. Discovering and releasing these limiting thoughts is the key to building the life you truly want.
