The Mostly Unbusy Mom’s Guide to Surviving (and mostly enjoying) the Holiday Season
Dec 01, 2022
“Our job in this lifetime is not to shape ourselves into some ideal we imagine we ought to be, but to find out who we already are and become it.”
― Steven Pressfield
Are you tired of flying through the holiday season, feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and busy?
Do you want to have a holiday season that you actually enjoy, at least most of the time?
Do you feel that there is no way you can possibly be organized, unbusy, and healthy this time of year?
Why be mostly unbusy?
I have been obsessed with decluttering, creating more space in my life, and getting healthy for the past couple of years. I would be inspired by the latest book, Instagram post, or Netflix series and would jump in head first with the latest hack on how to create a better life. Except it never really stuck. Sure the closet would be clean and I would use that new planner or eat “healthy” for a couple of weeks. Then life would happen and all of a sudden all that planning would go out the window. I would feel bad about the state of my house, day, or body and I would also feel bad about myself. Why couldn’t I stick to these plans?
Then a realization hit me. I don’t want to be unbusy, decluttered, or healthy all of the time; I want it most of the time. I want a decluttered house, but sometimes I would rather spend my time doing something fun. I want to have an organized day with free time for me, but sometimes I want to be busy, like when I am in the middle of a project. I really want to eat foods that make my body feel good, but I also want to eat treats and enjoy food.
This new belief that I could do things most of the time brought me such a sense of relief. It means that I don’t have to do things perfectly. And it means that I don’t have to do things exactly the way some guru or self-help expert preaches. It means that I can pick and choose what I want to focus on.
What is a mostly unbusy mom?
A mostly unbusy mom curates her life by
-
Choosing small steps that are simple, sustainable, and kind.
-
Cutting out the things that no longer matter, no longer work, or are no longer necessary.
-
Choosing when you want to be cluttered, busy, and unhealthy.
-
Learning to be at peace with being mostly ok.
