Let it be hard

Dec 15, 2022

I am always looking for ways to simplify my life. I love the feeling of getting rid of something that just isn’t working anymore. However, just because things are simple doesn’t mean they are easy. Some days things are just hard. Today I am going to talk about simply letting the hard days be hard.

How is this different than pivoting

Pivoting is changing your thinking or tactics when life throws you some curveballs. Sometimes that is the best course of action. What I mean by letting things be hard is staying in the mess instead of pivoting to get out of it. Some days this means staying up late getting work done because your kids were homesick and being pissed off about it. Because it sucks, and you are tired. This might mean that you cry and throw an adult temper tantrum. The bottom line is when things suck, it is ok to sit in the mud and cry why me.

How is this not giving up

Letting life be hard is not giving up. It is recognizing the reality of your current situation, knowing there is not much you can do about it right now. It is accepting life as it is instead of what it should be. The perfect example is when we plan some magical holiday event for our kids. We have this dream of how it will be. There will be smiles and songs and dancing elves will hand out candy canes. Instead, one kid is crying, the other is on their phone, and your partner is giving you the I told you so look. You could pivot. Or you can allow it to be what it is. This is what it looks like when we go see holiday lights with young kids. Instead of torturing yourself with what it should be, you accept what it currently is.

You are in that part of the movie

Jody Moore, a life coach I adore, likes to compare her life to a movie. When things get hard, she says, oh, this is the part of the movie where the main character goes through that struggle. Keep watching because the good part is coming up.

So if you are having a shit day, don’t should on yourself by thinking that it should be different. It is happening exactly the way it is supposed to happen. Let it be what it is. It’s that part of the movie. And remember, tomorrow is another day or scene;)
